The Gulf of Maine Rocky Shores Ecology Lab Collection contains an assortment of common living animals and plants collected from the intertidal and subtidal areas of a rocky shore.

Depending on “catch of the day,” species included may be:

Chlorophyta: green sea lettuce (Ulva)

Phaeophyta: bladder wrack (Fucus), horsetail kelp (Laminaria)

Rhodophyta: Irish moss (Chondrus), encrusting algae (Lithothamnion)

Porifera: crumb of bread sponge (Halichondria)

Cnidaria: frilled anemone (Metridium), wineglass hydroid (Obelia)

Bryozoa: bushy sea fern (Bugula)

Mollusca: tortoiseshell limpet (Acmaea), Atlantic red chiton (Ischnochiton), blue mussel (Mytilus), common periwinkle (Littorina), dog whelk (Thias)

Annelida: twelve-scaled worm (Lepidonotus)

Arthropoda: hermit crab (Pagurus), green crab (Carcinus), rock barnacle (Balanus), scud (Gammarus)

Echinodermata: orange-footed cucumber (Cucumaria), northern sea star (Asterias), green sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus)

Urochordata: sea vase (Ciona), sea peach (Halocynthia), cactus sea squirt (Boltenia e.)
