Gulf of Maine Sandy Shores (Ecology Lab Collection)
Gulf of Maine Sandy Shores Ecology Lab Collection
Please Note: This is a Live Science Specimen Assortment
The Sandy Shores Ecology Lab Collection from Gulf of Maine, Inc. includes a living assortment of marine plants and animals representative of Maine’s intertidal and subtidal sandy shore habitats. Each collection is freshly gathered from clean coastal areas of the Gulf of Maine and carefully selected to provide a rich educational experience for marine biology students, classrooms, and research facilities.
This diverse group of organisms offers a cross-section of major marine phyla — perfect for studying ecology, behavior, and adaptation in sandy beach environments. Species vary slightly with season and availability, but a typical collection includes members from the following groups:
Chlorophyta (Green Algae): Green Sea Lettuce (Ulva)
Phaeophyta (Brown Algae): Sugar Kelp (Alaria)
Cnidaria: Burrowing Anemone (Edwardsia)
Mollusca: Ten-Ridged Whelk (Neptunea), Chestnut Astarte (Astarte), Slipper Shell (Crepidula), Common Periwinkle (Littorina), Soft-Shelled Clam (Mya)
Annelida: Sandworm (Nereis), Spaghetti Worm (Amphitrite), Shimmy Worm (Nephtys), Lugworm (Arenicola), Bloodworm (Glycera)
Arthropoda: Hermit Crab (Pagurus), Green Crab (Carcinus), Bent Mysid Shrimp (Mysis), Sand Shrimp (Crangon), Beach Flea (Orchestia)
Echinodermata: Sylky Sea Cucumber (Chiridota), Sand Dollar (Echinarachnius), Northern Sea Star (Asterias), Green Sea Urchin (Strongylocentrotus)
Each collection represents a balanced sampling of coastal life and provides a complete, hands-on system for studying intertidal biodiversity. All specimens are sustainably collected by hand from Maine’s cold coastal waters and packed for safe overnight or two-day shipment to your lab or classroom.
Uses: Ideal for teaching marine biology, invertebrate zoology, ecology, or environmental science. Suitable for classroom aquaria, touch tank displays, or field study reference collections.
Note: This is a live marine specimen assortment. Actual species composition may vary based on seasonal availability. Natural variations in size, color, and activity are expected. For preserved sets or special requests, please contact: info@gulfofme.com.
