Live Scarlet Psolus (Psolus fabricii)
Please Note This Is A Live Science Specimen
The Scarlet Psolus (Psolus fabricii) is a striking sea cucumber species found on hard-bottomed intertidal shores and extending into deeper subtidal zones up to 90 meters. Recognized by its vibrant red-orange coloration and leathery body, this cold-water echinoderm attaches firmly to rocks, shells, or algae-covered surfaces using its strong ventral tube feet. Its delicate, feathery feeding tentacles extend outward to filter suspended particles from the water column, making it a fascinating organism for live observation.
This species is prized for marine biology studies, aquarium display, and invertebrate anatomy education. Its unique structure and vivid color make it one of the most visually captivating echinoderms of the North Atlantic.
Common name: Scarlet Psolus

Tidepool Tim says, “Psolus are known for their bright red color. They are cold water sea cukes distributed from Arctic to Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Scarlet sea cucumbers hide under the sand, exposing only the tentacles around its mouth! Mucus secreted from the tentacles allows the cuke to hold onto food as it draws the tentacles into its mouth one at a time.”
