Tidepool Tim says, "Three-spined sticklebacks are quite plentiful in the Gulf of Maine. They are famous for their evolutionary radiance out of the sea and into lakes and streams with access to Northern Atlantic waters. For example, ocean dwelling sticklebacks have 30 bony plates covering their body, while lake varieties have only a handful toward the front of their bodies (moving toward a bony skull arrangement)."
