Live Eelgrass (Zostera marina)
Please note this is a live marine specimen.

Eelgrass (Zostera marina) is a bright green, ribbon-like marine plant found growing in shallow saltwater along Maine’s coastal bays and estuaries. Rooted in muddy or sandy bottoms, it forms dense underwater meadows that provide critical habitat for juvenile fish, crabs, and invertebrates. As one of the most important seagrasses in the North Atlantic, Eelgrass plays a vital role in stabilizing sediments, improving water quality, and supporting biodiversity. Each clump is carefully hand-collected and shipped fresh for aquarium use, classroom study, or research on marine vegetation and coastal ecology.

Key Facts:
Common name: Eelgrass
Scientific name: Zostera marina
Locations: Shallow saltwater in muddy or sandy bottoms
Seasonality: Available spring – fall
Colors: Bright green
Size: Approximately 1’
Collected: By hand
Quantity: Sold by the plant
Note: This is a live marine specimen. Natural variations in size, color, and appearance from photos should be expected. If you would like any specimen preserved, please send a request to: info@gulfofme.com

Tidepool Tim says, "Many marine invertebrates, like snails, love to hide in eelgrass. Seagrass is also great in tanks because it provides the environment with oxygen. Water that's rich in dissolved oxygen is more apt to support both animal and plant life.  This grass will even add oxygen to the aquarium substrate with its root mass. Some tank dwellers, like urchins, will feed on your growing eelgrass."
