Gulf of Maine Kelp Holdfast Community (Ecology Lab Collection)
Live Kelp Holdfasts (Laminaria spp.)
Please note this is a live marine specimen.
Kelp Holdfasts (Laminaria spp.) form the anchor-like base of large brown kelps, securing the seaweed to rocks and hard substrates in Maine’s low intertidal and subtidal zones. These intricate, root-like structures create miniature ecosystems—home to small invertebrates such as amphipods, brittle stars, sponges, and tunicates. Each holdfast offers a living example of biodiversity and interdependence within the Gulf of Maine’s nearshore environment.
Sustainably hand-collected from protected coastal bays, these specimens are ideal for ecology labs, classroom aquaria, and marine biology demonstrations focused on community structure, substrate colonization, and kelp forest dynamics.
Key Facts:
Common name: Kelp holdfasts
Scientific name: Laminaria spp.
Locations: Low intertidal and subtidal zones in protected bays
Seasonality: Available year-round
Colors: Brown
Size: 3” – 6” clumps
Collected: By hand
Quantity: Sold by the clump or cluster
Note: This is a live marine specimen. Natural variations in size, color, and composition from photos should be expected. If you would like any specimen preserved or cleaned for display, please send a request to: info@gulfofme.com

The branching, finger-like structure of a holdfast.
Tidepool Tim says, “Holdfasts are a little slice of marine ecology. You get a nice cross-section of a community in action. Each one is unique containing molluscs, worms, bryozoa, sponges, hydroids, and other types of algae besides the kelp species. We grow these on our own mooring lines and then have them available for study year round.”
