Live Marine Springtail (Anurida maritima)
Please Note: This is a live marine specimen.

The Marine Springtail (Anurida maritima) is a tiny intertidal arthropod often seen hopping across wet rocks and barnacle beds during low tide. Despite their size, these hexapods are among the most abundant shoreline organisms, feeding on detritus, algae, and bacteria in the splash zone. Their deep blue-black color and agile movement make them a fascinating subject for studying shoreline ecology and microinvertebrate behavior.

Collected by hand from the rocky intertidal zones of Maine, each live specimen provides a rare opportunity to observe a coastal species uniquely adapted to life between the tides.

Common name: Marine springtail
Scientific name: Anurida maritima
Locations: Intertidal, feeding on barnacles
Seasonality: Available year round
Color: Deep blue-black
Size: 1/16”
Collected: By hand
Quantity: Sold by the each

Uses: Ideal for classroom observation, shoreline ecology lessons, and live aquarium microfauna studies.

Note: This is a live marine specimen. Natural variations in size, color, and appearance from photos should be expected. If you would like any specimen preserved, please send a request to: info@gulfofme.com.

Tidepool Tim says,  “Springtails are among the few insects that live on the beach, and they don’t take up much space. At their maximum, one might be 1/16" long. They’ll be noticed feeding on a barnacle as a group, deep blackish blue. Springtails have some super adaptations that allow them to be a marine species. Little hairs cover these creatures and repel water. The hairs are also useful for living on the surface tension of a tidepool. When the tide returns, they hide in crevices and breathe using air bubbles caught in their hairs.”
