Nine-spined Stickleback (Pungitius pungitius)
Live Nine-Spined Stickleback (Pungitius pungitius)
Please Note: This is a live marine specimen.
The Nine-Spined Stickleback (Pungitius pungitius) is a small, hardy fish found in estuaries, tidal pools, and weedy coastal shallows. Recognized by its series of nine dorsal spines, this species is a favorite for classroom study and aquarium observation. Its adaptability to varying salinities makes it a fascinating model organism for ecology and physiology research. With olive-gray coloration and subtle red fin membranes, these fish are both resilient and visually striking.
Hand-collected from sheltered Maine shores, each specimen is carefully selected to ensure health and quality for study or display.

Tidepool Tim says, "Three-spined sticklebacks are quite plentiful in the Gulf of Maine. They are famous for their evolutionary radiance out of the sea and into lakes and streams with access to Northern Atlantic waters. For example, ocean dwelling sticklebacks have 30 bony plates covering their body, while lake varieties have only a handful toward the front of their bodies (moving toward a bony skull arrangement)."
