Gulf of Maine Sea Sponges (4 Species)
Gulf of Maine Sea Sponges (4 Species Assortment)
Collected by hand from the rocky intertidal zones of the Gulf of Maine, this assortment features four species of native marine sponges — including Halichondria panicea (Crumb of Bread Sponge), Suberites ficus (Fig Sponge), Lotrochota birotulata (Finger Sponge), and Haliclona permollis (Purple Sponge). Found growing beneath rocks, on kelp holdfasts, and in tidepools, these porous organisms play a crucial ecological role in filtering seawater and providing habitat for smaller marine life.
Ideal for classroom study, research labs, or marine displays, these sponges showcase a wide range of forms, colors, and textures representative of Maine’s cold-water benthic communities.
Common names: Crumb of Bread Sponge, Fig Sponge, Finger Sponge, Purple Sponge
Scientific names: Halichondria panicea, Suberites ficus, Lotrochota birotulata, Haliclona permollis
Locations: Lower intertidal on undersides of large rocks or amid kelp holdfasts
Seasonality: Available year-round
Colors: Yellow, purple, green
Size: Clumps of sponge typically 3” – 6" in size
Collected: By hand
