Live Comb Jelly (Bolinopsis, Mnemiopsis, Beroe spp.) | Maine Ctenophore Specimen

Please note this is a live marine specimen.

The Comb Jelly (Bolinopsis, Mnemiopsis, Beroe spp.) is a mesmerizing ctenophore found in the open waters of the Gulf of Maine. Known for its transparent body and brilliant iridescent glow, this delicate marine organism propels itself gracefully using rows of ciliary combs that scatter light in shimmering blues, pinks, and purples. These jellies are non-stinging and are often used in aquarium displays, classroom demonstrations, and marine biology research to illustrate bioluminescence and ciliary movement.

Sustainably hand-collected from Maine’s coastal waters during the summer months, each specimen is handled with care to preserve its fragile structure and natural beauty.

Tidepool Tim says,  "Comb jellies are seasonally very abundant in our bays. Here we see northern comb jellies, Leidy's comb jelly, and beroe comb jellies. Comb jellies are predators of the sea walnut, and even eat other smaller comb jellies. Shipping these can sometimes be a challenge. Contact us with any questions you may have for this type of specimen.”
