Live Siphonophore (Siphonophora spp.)
Please Note This Is A, Live Science Specimen

The Siphonophore (Siphonophora spp.) is one of the ocean’s most extraordinary colonial organisms—composed of many individual zooids that function together as a single entity. Related to jellyfish and corals, these drifting pelagic animals inhabit the open ocean, often appearing in upwellings or around eddy currents near peninsulas. Their delicate, transparent bodies shimmer with iridescent hues across the visible spectrum, creating a mesmerizing display when illuminated.

Ranging in size from a few inches to over 100 feet, siphonophores are among the longest animals in the world. Each colony includes specialized members for feeding, reproduction, and movement, working in perfect coordination—a true marvel of marine adaptation.

Common name: Siphonophore
Scientific name: Siphonophora spp.
Locations: Open ocean water, upwellings, eddy currents around peninsulas
Seasonality: Summer months, sometimes seen during fall and winter
Colors: Translucent, bright spectrum of colors
Size: 1”–130’
Collected: By dip net
Quantity: Sold by the each

Uses: Excellent for advanced marine biology research, pelagic ecology education, and display in public aquariums and scientific study collections.

Note: This is a live marine specimen. Natural variations in size, color, and appearance from photos should be expected. If you would like any specimen preserved, please send a request to: info@gulfofme.com

Tidepool Tim says,  “Colonial hydroids are true show-stoppers. They may look like jellyfish - but they are actually carnivorous colonies of polyps working in unison. Siphonophores are “superorganisms.” They are usually elongate and rope-like, reaching sizes of up to 40 m in length, and longer than a blue whale! To appreciate this animal fully, you will need to see it submerged in water. The individuals that join to form siphonophores are called “zooids” and they participate in divided labor. Each “piece” of the animal does a different job!”
