Surf Clam (Spisula solidissima)
Surf Clam (Spisula solidissima)
Please Note This Is A Live Science Specimen
The Surf Clam (Spisula solidissima), also known as the hen clam, is a large bivalve found along sandy intertidal zones and shallow coastal waters. Recognized for its thick, oval shell that can range in color from white to black with hints of green algae, this species is an excellent example of a burrowing filter feeder commonly studied in marine ecology.
Perfect for aquariums, classroom labs, or coastal biology lessons, surf clams offer students the opportunity to explore bivalve anatomy, feeding mechanisms, and sediment-dwelling adaptations firsthand.
Common name: Surf clam, hen clam
Scientific name: Spisula solidissima
Locations: Lower intertidal on spring tides
Seasonality: Available year round
Colors: Shells range from white to black with green algal tint
Size: 4″ – 6″
Collected: By hand at low water
Quantity: Sold by the each
Uses: Excellent for aquariums, marine biology studies, classroom demonstrations, and bivalve ecology research.
Note: This is a live marine specimen. Natural variations in size, color, and appearance from photos should be expected. If you would like any specimen preserved, please send a request to: info@gulfofme.com.

A 1.25 lb clam!
Tidepool Tim says, "Surf clams are a very hard-shelled giant-sized clam they filter feed in the fine sand and their shells are often found washed up on beaches up and down Atlantic coastlines. This is a very popular clam in restaurants and for use in chowders, etc. This clam is not a native to our local bays and so we collect them in southern Maine. Each clam may weigh as much as a pound.”
